Denis S. Gaffney, age 79, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1968, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011 after a long illness. He had retired after serving his country for more than 22 years in the United States Army. He was a senior personnel specialist.

Denis Stanilaus Gaffney was born on May 7, 1932 in Killarney, Ireland to Patrick James and Nancy R. (Donovan) Gaffney. After high school he joined the Army, where while stationed in Europe, he met and married Elizabeth Margaret Brosch. They were married February 25, 1960 in Stromberg, Germany.

He proudly served in Vietnam and was a decorated soldier. At his retirement in 1980 he had attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. He attended and graduated from Pikes Peak Community College where he studied the automotive repair trade. In the years following his retirement he helped a close friend in the plumbing and construction trade. Mr. Gaffney raised pigeons and was a member of the Pikes Peak Homing Pigeon Association. In his early years he was a talented swimmer, rugby player, and golfer. They were parishioners at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth; his daughters: Patricia H. Gaffney and Camilla H. Gaffney, all of Colorado Springs and his son: Vincent (wife, Yun) Gaffney of Centennial, Colorado. He is also survived by his brother: Patrick (wife, Diana) Gaffney of Harpenden, England, and his step-granddaughters: Audra and Heather.

Memorial Services are planned for 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. A reception will follow at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 S. Union Boulevard.

He will be dearly missed.
