Bette G. Smith, age 74, a resident of Colorado Springs for over 60 years, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at a local hospital. She was a homemaker and a caregiver.
Bette Gale Sandusky was born on March 19, 1939 in Manzanola, Colorado to the late Vern and Jewell (VanHook) Sandusky. She was a 1958 graduate of Colorado Springs High School. She married Melvin G. Smith on June 8, 1958 at the Calvary United Methodist Church in downtown Colorado Springs. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, the Waggin’ Wheelers Square Dance Club and she enjoyed going out to breakfast with friends, knitting, crocheting, and square dancing.
She is survived by her loving husband, Melvin Smith; and her children, Shelly Smith and Kevin (Denise Behnke) Smith all of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Jade Behnke; half-brother Raymond (Ethel) Lane; and her brother, Roy (Peggy) Sandusky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Darell, in 2011; and her brother Ronnie Sandusky.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 4210 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. A reception will then take place at the Church Fellowship Hall. Memorials in Bette’s name may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church or to the American Heart Association.
