Betty Sue DeJong of Colorado Springs passed away Friday, June 12, 2015. She was 74.

Betty was born at home on January 21, 1941 in Boulder, Colorado to Leslie Cecil and Oleta Mae (Cotton) Chance. She married John Carl DeJong on June 7, 1959, in Boulder. After moving to California to start her married life, she and John eventually settled in Colorado Springs where she was a resident for more than 43 years.

A graduate of Boulder High School, Betty was an excellent student and gave up a college nursing scholarship to get married and raise her three sons. However, she pursued independent learning which led to her becoming a nurse’s aide, a secretary and a teacher’s assistant over the years.

Her faith was always an important part of her life. She was Deacon of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was involved in the Stephen Ministries program. Betty enjoyed traveling, her bible study, reading, and, most of all, her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her boys and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Survivors include three sons, Tim (Joan) of Parker CO, Dan (Shelley) of Kiowa, CO and Rob (Anne Marie) of Las Vegas, NV; a brother, Don (Christine) Chance of Westminster, CO; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was deeply loved and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, June 18 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2845 Parliament Drive, Colorado Springs. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. A private burial service will take place on Friday, June 19 at Mountain View Cemetery in Boulder, CO.

Contributions may be made to Children’s International at www.children.org. This is a charity that she cared deeply about during her life. Flowers can be sent to the Funeral Home, Shrine of Remembrance Mortuary, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO. 80910 the day before the services or to Covenant Presbyterian Church.
