Catherine Zvonkovich passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016. Catherine, known as “Kay” to her friends, was an amazing woman. She was always volunteering, serving on committees, leading tours and singing solo or in choirs. She was 93 years old and was active until her last few weeks.
Catherine was born in Galveston, Texas in 1923 to George Galich and Rosa (Andrich) Galich. The family moved to Chicago where she grew up. Catherine was the oldest of 8 brothers and sisters. At a young age she was singing, even having a radio show. At a dance she met Joseph Zvonkovich, the love of her life. They were married in 1940 and had three children, Virginia, Joseph Jr. “Joey”, and Gabrielle Geralyn “Gigi”.
Catherine was an executive secretary, and vice president of Community Services for the East Side Chamber of Commerce in Chicago and served on a hospital guild. She organized a Croatian children’s national music festival which was attended by over 4000 people.
In the mid eighties, the family moved to Colorado Springs. Kay and Joe became active in the International Polka Club and the Czech Dancers group. Kay led bus tours, was a Red Hat lady and was active in AARP. She was a devoted Catholic and sang in choirs for her church in Chicago and at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in the Black Forest.
Catherine is survived by 3 sisters: Violet, Mary and Dorothy; a daughter, Virginia Scully; son-in-law, Michael Scully; grandsons: Michael and Kevin Scully; daughter-in-law, Mariya Truskol Zvonkovich; and granddaughters: Tamara and Andreja Zvonkovich.
The visitation will be held on Thursday at the Shrine of Remembrance from 5 – 7 PM and the Rosary at 7 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 2nd at 2:00 PM at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church, 11020 Teachout Road, in the Black Forest.
