Charles Marion Smith Brooks
Longtime Colorado Springs resident, Charles “Charlie” Brooks, age 95, passed away December 22, 2011. Born in East Hartford, CT on February 24, 1916, Charles grew up in Colorado Springs, graduating from Colorado Springs High School in 1935 and Colorado College in1940.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie Wendel Brooks and brothers Howard and Richard Brooks. He is survived by his children: Susan Brooks Buzenberg and Stephen Brooks (wife Mary); grandchildren: Erik and Jay Buzenberg (wife Dacia Herbulock); David, Kristina and Andy Brooks and three great-grandchildren.
After marrying Marge in 1940, they moved to Stratton, CO where Charlie taught school. In 1943 he began his 35 year career with Continental Airlines serving in six different cities including Pueblo, CO, Wichita, KS, and Oklahoma City, OK. In 1978 they retired to Colorado Springs, making many trips to the family cabin in Buena Vista, Colorado. In retirement Charlie enjoyed golfing at Patty Jewett, gardening in his back yard, sharing a meal at Senor Manuel’s and spending time with friends. Most recently he resided at Winslow Court and Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs.
Throughout his life he made a friend of nearly everyone he met with a kind thought or encouraging word for all. He was active in the Association of Continental Retirees, serving as its President from 1991 to 1993. Charlie was also a member of East United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011, 2:00 p.m. at East United Methodist Church, 1505 E. Monument, Colorado Springs, CO 80909. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to East United Methodist Church at the above address.
