October 2, 1952 – March 11, 2020

David Holmes, a Colorado Springs native, died on March 11, 2020.  Having been born to Willie and Frances Holmes on October 2, 1952, he became a Junior Olympic Champion in 1969 and was named Colorado Prep Athlete of the Year in 1970.  David served as a Military Policeman from 1972 to 1974 having completed United States Army Military Police School in 1973.  After a successful career in Electric Operations at the Nixon Power Plant, David retired as an Operation Superintendent of Colorado Springs Utilities after 31 years.

Most of his life was spent married to Jerree Holmes.  They were 3 weeks away from being married for 46 years.  Traveling, especially to Alaska, brought him great joy; he loved fishing at Lake Conchas, New Mexico and spending time with his family.  Known as the family “Grill Master”, his smoked ribs and smoked mac ‘n cheese were requested for every family gathering.  He always remained an avid supporter of the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos.

David is predeceased by his parents, Willie, and Frances Holmes; and his brother, Michael Holmes.  He is survived by his wife, Jerree Holmes; his sons, Matthew Holmes, and Jonathan Holmes (wife, Katheryn; and daughter, Georgia); and siblings, Debra Phillips, Marilyn Fayne, and Diana Holmes.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2020 at Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd.  Private interment will be at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.

  7. I first met Jerree and David Holmes in 1986 through David’s sister Debra Phillips, so I had the pleasure of David’s acquaintance for 34 years. He was a good husband to Jerree and good father to his sons, Jonathan and Matthew. He was successful at his career, and after retirement he enjoyed gardening and making home improvements. My husband and I always enjoyed meeting up with the Holmes’ when we went to Colorado Springs or they were in the San Diego, CA area. He is gone way too soon and we send condolences to the family.
