David M. SchaeferDavid Marvin Schaefer

David M. Schaefer, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on September 30, 2018. He had lived in the Colorado Springs area since 1953. He was employed by Mountain Bell, Quest, and CenturyLink continuously for over 40 years.

He was born on March 12, 1937 to Marvin and Serena Schaefer (Oanes) in Truman, Minnesota (Martin County). Dave spent his early childhood on the family farm. He moved to Monument, Colorado in 1953, graduating from Lewis Palmer High School in 1955.

He loved the outdoors and worked for the U.S. Forest Service before serving in the U.S. Army. He was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, singing in the choir, serving as a Trustee, and always being a strong supporter of his faith. He was a fisherman, a hiker, a skier, and an adventurous traveler. Dave was a square dancer and loved to polka! He thoroughly enjoyed family dinners and holidays, reunion picnics, and was always happy to be at the nieces’ and nephews’ celebrations. Graduations, weddings, 4-H events, sporting events, and rodeos would find Uncle Dave always cheering and encouraging.

In addition to his genuine caring and interest in all of our lives, we will all miss his special surprises, thoughtful gifts of fruit and farmers market goodies. He also had fun sneaking thoughtful or mischievous gifts into our homes without us knowing. A large owl to frighten away the flickers, a giant sponge mailed to an unseasonably rainy Seattle, a fake dove hung in his neighbor’s tree, a motion activated croaking frog at a family picnic, and many more too numerous to list.

He is survived by his siblings: Don Schaefer (Sheryl), Debbie Bornzin (Gary), Diane Gilmore (Phil), Darlene Hiatt (Dale) and Dee Younger. He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew, Jeff Conlan, and a great-niece, Lisa Bailey. Surviving are 10 nieces and nephews, 19 grandnieces and -nephews and three great-grandnephews and one great-grandniece.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. followed by his funeral at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, October 5 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2226 N. Corona Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. Reception will follow the service at the church. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Court of David, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Memorials in Dave’s name may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2226 N. Corona Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80907 or Interim Hospice, 1901 N. Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.
