Donald Eugene Hurd
Donald E. Hurd passed away suddenly at home on Sunday December 30, 2018 just one month shy of his 90th birthday. He was a resident of Colorado Springs for the last 60 years and had formerly lived in Oklahoma and Kansas. Before retiring he ran his own business for many years. With Don Hurd Distributing Company he provided wholesale snacks and bar supplies to businesses all over Colorado. He especially enjoyed the several years when both of his sons worked alongside him.
Don was born on February 3, 1929 just outside Enid, Oklahoma to Andrew Clinton Hurd and wife Anna Margaret Masters Hurd. By high school his family had moved to Kansas and it was in nearby Great Bend that Don met the love of his life Alberta Mae Charles. Don and Bert married on September 5, 1958. Bert passed away of a stroke in June of 2017 just a few short months away from their 70th wedding anniversary.
Don had a knack for fixing anything that was broken. He really enjoyed working in his home and yard and was always available to help out family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. He loved travelling the country in a fifth wheel trailer with all of his favorite things – wife Bert, their many dogs, and when they were lucky even a grandkid or two. He left love notes and silly poems for Bert next to the coffee pot every morning and he never missed a chance to sing her love songs either.
He is survived by son Mark and daughter – in – law Kathy, daughter Michelle and son – in – law Mike, and daughter – in -law Donna. Grandchildren include Angel and husband Ben, April and husband Matt, Danielle and husband Paul, Ryan and wife Beth, great – grandchildren Tyler, Damian and Brooklyn and last but not least by his beloved dog and constant companion Scooter.
Don was preceded in death not only by his loving wife Bert but also by his eldest son Micheal.
A small private service was held on January 7, 2019. As requested his ashes were co- mingled with those of his wife Bert. They are once again together, now and forever, and are interred at Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs.
Memorials in Don’s honor may be made to an animal rescue group of your choice.
