Doris Jean Brown
Doris Jean Brown, age 75, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at a local hospital. Doris Jean Merritt was born April 5, 1938 in Louisiana to the parentage of Marvin and Sybil Merritt. After the death of her mother, when she was 5 years old, the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas.
Doris married Tommy Lee Russ. To this union, one son, Chester C. Russ, was born. She later married Willie D. Brown. To this union two sons and two daughters were born: Deborah Tartt, Gregory Brown, Ursula Brown and Kevin Brown.
Doris confessed a hope in the Risen Lord at the Mount Zion Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Rev. S.T. Alexander. Later, Doris united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Homer, Louisiana under Rev. M.N. Flyn. In September 1974, she united with Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorate of Rev. El Ray Johnson. There she served faithfully as Church Chef, President of the Mission and Angelic Choir, Chairperson of Christian Education, Superintendent of Sunday School, Teacher of Sunday School, and Pastor’s Aide for Rev. Sandy Ray Fields.
For fifteen years she worked at Fort Carson’s dining halls. For eight years she worked as manager and cook at Digital Corporation for Marriott. Her precious memories will be cherished by her family and a host of relatives and friends. These include three devoted sons: the late Chester C. Russ; Gregory Brown; Kevin Brown, both of Colorado Springs; two devoted daughters: Deborah Tartt (son-in-law Stacy Tartt) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Ursula Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado. There are sixteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Willie D. Brown, both parents and her one sister; Marvine Howard. The whereabouts of her brother, Thomas Merritt, are unknown.
A visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Friday, August 9, 2013 at the Friendship Baptist Church, 633 E. Dale Street, Colorado Springs, 80903. Entombment will follow at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Garden of Angels. A luncheon reception will then be held back at Friendship Baptist Church.
