Douglas Duane Huisenga, 61, of Colorado Springs, passed away on February 13, 2016 at his residence. Doug was born on June 24, 1954 in Sac City, Iowa to Duane and Ruth (Flink) Huisenga. At the age of two, Doug moved to Colorado Springs where he has since resided.
Doug graduated from Roy J. Wasson High School and joined the United States Army. He served at the DMZ during the peace mission to Korea in 1977 and continued to proudly serve until he was honorably and medically retired in 1978 due to a tragic car accident. Once healed, Doug worked as a facilities and maintenance worker for Honeywell for over ten years.
In his spare time, Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing basketball and baseball, as well as volunteering. He volunteered at bingo every Friday evening and at several Purple Heart events. He was the ultimate neighbor and caregiver; always taking the time to care for others. Doug was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and R.E.A. (Retired Enlisted Association.)
Doug is survived by his mother, Ruth; sisters: Sandra Yowell, Debra and Brad Crytser and Dena Huisenga. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as his beloved dogs: Shadow and Zoey. He was preceded in death by his father, Duane; sister, Sharon Huisenga; and both of his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. A funeral service and military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Private interment will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
