E. Marie Thornton, age 97, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012 at a local care center. She was a nurse at Memorial Hospital and later a nurse for a local dermatologist, Dr. Harvey Johnston.
Eleanor Marie Robb was born on June 23, 1914 in Rocky Ford, Colorado to the late Eugene and Mae Charlotte (Mellon) Robb. The Robbs had 4 children, including Marie. Mae’s 2nd husband Walter McBride brought her 3 more sisters. Two of the McBride daughters still survive.
Like her mother who outlived two husbands, Marie had two husbands. She married Charles H. Lewis just after she received her RN degree from Beth El Nursing School in Colorado Springs in August, 1935. Charlie Lewis was active in the area as a restaurant owner and later passed away in 1977. Marie’s second husband, Emery Thornton, was a retired plumber, who passed away in 1987.
Marie was a life member of Beth El Alumni. She was past president of local BPOE #309 Elk’s Wives Club, a Life Member of Patty Jewett Women’s Golf Association, and a long time member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a volunteer for Silver Key Senior Services.
Marie and Charles had two children, Charles H. Lewis, Jr. and Norma Jean Lewis. She is survived by her son: Chuck from Tenessee; two grandchildren: Chuck III and Lisa Migchelbrink, both of Portland, Oregon; two great-grandchildren: John and Austin Migchelbrink of Oregon; and a step-granddaughter: Shannon Snyder of Florida. She is also survived by two sisters: Patty Miller of Montana, and Louise Maetche of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Private inurnment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum in Colorado Springs. Marie was just a few weeks from her 98th birthday.
