Eugene “Gene” Moeny was born March 17, 1923 in Glendale, Arizona and died August 19, 2016 at Springs Village Care Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Lois. Gene is survived by his sister, Virginia; two children, Don (Judy) of Grand Junction, Colorado and Kay (Robert) Newth of Newell, South Dakota; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A graduate of Alamosa High School, he was a B-17 pilot during WWII and upon discharge entered Colorado State College (UNC) where he earned BA and MA degrees in music education. He married his wife, Lois, in 1944. Gene was a lifelong music educator starting his career in 1948, teaching in Dawson and Taos, New Mexico, and Sargents, Ignacio, Durango, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs and the Colorado Music Educators Association.

After retirement he started a second career as a piano tuner. He learned to play bagpipes studying with Gordon Spears and played with the Pikes Peak Highlanders and the Colorado Skye Band. He had many piping students, many who are still active pipers in various bands.

Gene was active in the Clan MacBean in North America, serving as office manager of the clan, clan piper and treasurer. He traveled to Scotland with the Clan Chief visiting the Scottish Homelands. Gene and Lois participated in 7 Clan gatherings held in various locations in the United States and Canada. He was active in the Scottish Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

He was an avid traveler, camper and fly fisherman. Gene and Lois toured throughout the western US and Canada.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 22 at the First United Methodist Church, 420 North Nevada Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please volunteer or donate to your favorite charity.
