Will Lindsay

Sergeant First Class Will Duston Lindsay, United States Army Special Forces, was killed in action in Kunduz, Afghanistan on Thursday, March 21, 2019. Will spent nearly all of his life in Colorado. He was raised in Cortez and had lived in Colorado Springs since 2006.

Will was born on August 26, 1985 in Cortez, Colorado, to Grant and Tammy Lindsay. He graduated from Montezuma Cortez High School in 2004 and joined the Army immediately after high school, enlisting on July 7, 2004. He married the love of his life, Sarah Unger, in 2010 and together they had four daughters. Sarah and their daughters were the center of Will’s world. He was a devoted husband, a dedicated father, and a generous, trustworthy and reliable friend. A true Colorado native, Will loved to hunt and fish, and he liked to work with his hands, building projects around his house and finishing their basement all by himself. When he wasn’t busy with work, family, or his other hobbies, he shamed friends on the golf course with his mid-70s game.

After completing Basic Training and Airborne School, Will volunteered for and completed the Special Forces Selection and Qualification Course, earning his Green Beret in July 2006. He was assigned to 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Carson, Colorado as an assistant Operations and Intelligence Sergeant with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion. During his 15 years of service, Will deployed seven times: five deployments to Iraq, one to Tajikistan in support of a counter-narcotics mission, and one to Afghanistan. His military decorations include the Silver Star medal, four Bronze Star medals, two Meritorious Service medals, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, a Military Free Fall Jumpmaster Badge and a Master Parachutist Badge.

Will is survived by his wife, Sarah Lindsay; their four daughters; parents, Grant and Tammy Lindsay; two brothers: Levi (Sophos Nhem) Lindsay and Cole (Maegan) Lindsay; grandfather, Richard Lindsay; grandmother, Aliene Waldorf; parents-in-law: Bruce and Judy Unger; sister-in-law Melissa (Chad) Wagner; uncle, Kent (Sharon) Lindsay; two cousins: Matt (Wendy) Lindsay and Justin (Kayleen) Lindsay; his team brothers, and many loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Warren S. Waldorf, and his grandmother, Nelda Lindsay.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at New Life Church, 11025 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80921. A memorial service will also be held in Cortez, Colorado at a future date.

  36. Gone but not forgotten. Will, you gave the ultimate sacrifice for us! THANK YOU SIR.
    Condolences for your family ??

  37. Grant and Tammy
I didn’t know Will, but I know you guys. I know his grandparents, though some have passed.
Will was born to good people……he had to be awesome and a pride and joy to his family.
I’m proud and thankful that another brave soldier from Cortez decided to fight for his home knowing the risks. It take a special person to put himself in harms way and ultimately give all he had for his country……which first and foremost was his family.
I’m so grieved that you will not hear the sound of his voice…..the laughter, tears, and the “ love you, Mom… love you, Dad”. Hold the memories close. He left them for you.

    Mrs. Will Linsday and children,
I can’t say much more than what I said to Grant and Tammy. You had a different type relationship and love with Will. From the bottom of my heart I pray that, even though you all will walk this dark path in your grief, you know you have a Comforter to help you through…….and one Glorious Day, he will be awakened to a new and wonderful life. I long for that day, and just as with Micah, I hope to meet Will and shake his hand…..but first I’m going to sit and talk with Jesus for awhile.
My love and condolences to all of you.
    Gail McCutcheon Barker

I am grateful for the time we spent together in the Q-Course, the time we spent together as teammates at Carson, and the time we spent as friends over the past 15 years. 52. Will was one of the first guys I met upon being moved to C/2/10. He treated me like I belonged and that I was one of the guys. He was instrumental in me taking over the arms room and knowing what was expected of me. Will taught me so much that I was able to be adapt to anything thrown my way. He was a man of great respect and honor. My condolences to his family and friends.

  53. We were so sorry to hear of Will’s death. Words just do not seem to cut it at times like this. Years ago, Bruce & Judy were our wonderful neighbors during our tour at Carson. We never met Will but I did serve at HQ, USASFC(A) when 10th Group moved to Carson. I learned firsthand what tremendous soldiers we had in those groups. Will, I’m certain, was one of 2d Battalion’s best. I wish we could have met him. I’m sure we would have liked him instantly. I passed word to MG(Ret) Harley Davis, a former member of 2d Battalion, 10th Group and he sends his heartfelt condolences to Will’s family as well.
