George L. Belarde, age 75, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1960 and formerly of Trinidad, Colorado passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at a local care center. He had retired from the maintenance department of Colorado College and had previously been the owner and operator of the Big Steer Restaurant on Platte Avenue.
George was born on December 6, 1937 in Gulnare, Colorado to the late Steve and Flora (Vigil) Belarde. He was a 1955 graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Trinidad. He was a wonderful cook and shared many recipes and delicious meals with his family and many friends. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church – Southgate.
He will be best remembered for his love of family, the trips to Cripple Creek and his faithful canine companion “Baby.”
He is survived by his beloved sisters: Rose Santistevan (husband, John); and Frances McKenna (companion, Eddie Sandoval) of Colorado Springs; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Leola Hillman and his brother: Benjamin Belarde.
A visitation is planned from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. A reception will then be held at the Valkyrie Community Room, 129 Bonfoy Avenue.
