George Watt Miles passed away on November 8, 2024, at the age of 95. He was a resident of Colorado Springs since 1973. As a U.S. Army soldier, George had previously lived in Texas, Alaska, Arizona, and Panama. He served in Vietnam in 1972.
George was born on a farm near Mt. Croghan, South Carolina, on November 4, 1929, to Walker B. Miles and Nettie Mae (Short) Miles. He married Jean Ann Duncan in Bisbee, Arizona, on September 7, 1957. Jean predeceased him by seven years to the day, having passed away on November 8, 2017.
George excelled as a recruiter and later as a career counselor in the Army, winning numerous awards and commendations throughout his career (1948-1978). His performance reviews noted his energy, imagination, and attention to detail, as well as his personable and professional demeanor. In retirement, George was for many years the National Parliamentarian of The Retired Enlisted Association.
He is survived by his brother, Jerry “Brooks” Miles of South Carolina; children: Steven Miles of New Jersey; and Michael Miles and Michael’s wife, Kim (Messamore) Miles, of Colorado; grandchildren: Halie Miles and her partner, Christopher Collins, of Colorado; Dalton Miles of Colorado; and Peyton Miles of Texas; and great-grandchildren, Kyle Collins and Kennedy Collins.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
