Georgia J. Smith, 98, took her Lord’s hand and entered heaven on February 6, 2021. She was born in Tabernash, Colorado, on November 6, 1922, to Amos and Grace (Williams) Smith. As a young child, she was raised in a boxcar and attended church in the Emmanuel Chapel Car on the train, when it came to town. Her school years were spent living up Hunt Creek in the family ranch home in Phippsburg, Colorado where she attended elementary school and graduated from Yampa High School in 1940. A BS degree from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado was granted to her in 1945.When her teaching career began in Colorado Springs, in 1947, she joined the First United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Nightingale Circle of the UMW until her death. She was a treasured teacher in School District #11 Colorado Springs, teaching at Garfield and Stratton Elementary Schools.
For more than 60 years, Georgia was active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, an Honorary Sorority for women Educators. She was a member of the NEA, CEA and CSTA teacher’s organizations, the Alpha and Omega, retired teachers group, American University Women and Colorado Springs Public Employees Associations for Retired Educators. She sponsored a child in Ecuador.
Her survivors include nephews Kevin Gneiser, Pat Gneiser (Marrianne), Gary Crowner (Judy); Niece-in- law, Susi Crowner; nephew- in -law, Darold Jones; honorary niece, Kris Ives and many other dear family and friends.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Grace Smith; sisters, Flora Crowner and Frances Gneiser; niece, ErleLynne Jones; nephew, Terry Crowner; and her dearest friend, Frances Slinkman.
A memorial service will be held on June 12, 2021 at 11:00AM at the First United Methodist Church. Donations can be made to FUMC at 420 N. Nevada 80903.
