Herbert R. Koen
Herbert R. Koen, age 82, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1967, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. He had retired from the United States Air Force where he specialized in Data Processing.
Herbert Ridgeway Koen was born on November 11, 1929 in Russellville, Arkansas to the late Paul and Mary (Luker) Koen. He was a graduate of Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas where he excelled in football. He also attended Baylor University in Texas. He married Janie Marie Whitten in 1947 in Carthage, Texas. He was stationed locally at Ent Air Force Base and NORAD.
Herbert and Janie traveled the country with the Air Force and were, for a time, stationed in Panama where they had the time of their lives. Herbert enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be best remembered for his love for elk hunting.
He is survived by his son, Marcus R. Koen of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Mary Binns of Denver; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie, in 1981; and a daughter, Theresa Cranford, in 2005.
Family memorial services will be held in Panama City, Florida where his cremains will be scattered at sea. Memorials may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
