James Melvin Wheatley, Jr.
James Wheatley, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 20, 2012 after a battle with leukemia. He was a devoted husband and a wonderful father to his wife’s children.
He was born on December 30, 1957 in Washington, D.C. to James Wheatley, Sr. and Ada (Oliver) Wheatley.
Jim had a great sense of humor, never afraid to crack a joke regardless of how ill or grumpy he felt. He was a kind and charismatic man who enjoyed working with children, dedicating his time to organizations such as Candle Lighters, which raised money and held events for children suffering from cancer. Jim was a mountain man and natural woodsman. Someone who loved to tell stories, he was always recalling one event or another, with a habit of repeating his favorite ones when he met anyone new. Many of his favorites involved his hunting trips and the skiing escapades of his youth.
Jim was many things to many people: son, brother, husband, father, friend. Deeply loved and truly one of a kind he will be immensely missed by many.
He is survived by his wife Kathryn Wheatley to whom he had been wed for 17 years; his daughter, Amanda Liston; his step-son, Dylan Liston; his grandson, D.J. Liston; his brother, Greg Wheatley; and his sister, Theresa Wheatley. He was preceded in death by his parents.
