James P. Weaver was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and was truly a member of the greatest generation. He lost his father at age twelve and quit school in the tenth grade to work in a steel mill to support his mother and sister.

At age eighteen, Jim was drafted into the Army and served proudly with distinction for 32 years, fighting in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Jim was the most senior Command Sergeant Major in the Army, 16 out of 32 years. He was offered the position of Sergeant Major of the Army twice, and promptly declined both times (he was no politician). He cared more about his soldiers, commenting at times how many of his young officers were promoted to Colonel or higher (to include the son of General Patton as a young 2nd Lt.).

After WWII ended, the best thing to ever happen to Jim occurred when he met his wife, Edith Kunzemann, in post war Germany. They were married in Germany on November 27, 1945. They spent the next 70 years traveling the world at various duty stations. After Vietnam, Jim was stationed at Fort Carson, where he retired in 1975. After 29 moves throughout their lives, the couple decided to make Widefield their permanent home.

Jim loved his family, his Labrador Retrievers, hunting ducks and pheasants, and his beloved New York Yankees.

Edith passed away on February 21, 2015, and truth be told, Jim was never the same. In his last years, his wish was to be reunited with his loving wife. He received that wish on May 1, 2018, passing away peacefully with his family at his side.

Jim leaves to cherish his memory his loving family: son, Jim; daughter-in-law, Sandy (more like his own daughter); and grand kids, Lindsey and Jimmy, the apples of his eye.

All is well Sergeant Major; your tour of duty is over. Thank you for your service to our country and to our family. We will love and miss you always.

We would like to extend our immense gratitude to the staff at Brookdale Broadmoor and Brookdale Hospice for their loving care of Dad and our family.

There will be no services per Dad’s wishes.
