Coach Jerry Carle, age 90, called his last play Saturday night, April 12, 2014 when he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and his dog, “Max.” He was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.
Jerry was born on July 26, 1923 in North St. Paul, Minnesota. Growing up in Minnesota he loved to fish and hunt. As a student at North St. Paul High School, he led varsity teams in basketball, baseball and football. During this time, his greatest victory was finding the love of his life and future wife, Eileen Weber. His achievements in football lead him to play at University of Minnesota and finish his collegiate career at Northwestern University. During this time he also wore the uniform of a Marine, proudly serving his country for 11 years.
High school sweethearts, Jerry and Eileen married April 14, 1945. Sixty-six years later he still called her “Honey.” When the gridiron called, Jerry returned to football as an Assistant Coach and in 1951 he began his legacy signing on as Head Football Coach of the Colorado College Tigers. Over his 33 year career, as a head coach of football, basketball, baseball, golf and as athletic director, his influence touched endless student athletes. Jerry loved the college and the college loved him. His life was rich because of the people, players and colleagues.
Life was just as good following retirement, where he and Eileen spent time with friends and family on the golf course, traveling, and during happy hour. Spoiling his grandkids was one of his favorite pastimes and a good scratch and a hearty meal were never lost on the family dogs.
Jerry and Honey are reunited at last and he is survived by his children: Dave (wife Diane) Carle, Jan Carle, Judy Carle; and six wonderful grandchildren: Kasey (husband Anthony) Weber, McKinsey Roebken, Lindsey Roebken, Megan Carle, Shannon (husband Jordon) Oldfather, and Michael Carle. He has six great-grandsons who will miss his stories and his garlic pickles. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Shove Memorial Chapel at Colorado College, 1010 North Nevada Avenue. A reception will immediately follow the services and will be at the El Pomar Sports Complex, 44 West Cache La Poudre. Private interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Jerry Carle Varsity Strength and Conditioning Center at Colorado College. Please note, donations should be made out to Colorado College Athletic Department, in the memo indicate Jerry Carle Memorial Fund. Mail to: Colorado College Athletics, c/o Jane Newberry, 14 East Cache La Poudre Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.
