John F. Swofford

Colonel John F. Swofford (Retired) a longtime resident of Woodmoor, passed away peacefully on Monday at Liberty Manor. His wife, Pearl, of 50 years was at his bedside. He served his country for more than 30 years in the United States Air Force.

Col. Swofford, a native Texan, was called to active duty in March of 1941 as a second lieutenant of Infantry. He entered pilot training in 1943 as a captain and finished his WWII tour by flying B-29s from Tinian and the Marianas. He logged more than 8,000 flight hours. John was a founding member of the Monument Hill Sertoma Club and an active member of the Woodmoor community.

He is survived by his beloved wife: Pearl; daughters, Dianne Johnson, Marianne Manuele; two granddaughters, Leslie Cuyler, Christina Mueller; a great granddaughter, Kristy Oakland; great-grandson, Todd Oakland (a sergeant in the marines); and two great-great-grandsons, Rylan and Tyler. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Davis.

Private services are planned and burial of his cremated remains with Air Force honors will be held at the St. Matthias Episcopal Cemetery in Woodmoor.
