Johnnie T. Stokes, age 84, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1997 and formerly of Salida, Colorado and Humble, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Pikes Peak Hospice residence. He was a retired insurance claims adjuster and investigator.
Johnnie Thomas Stokes was born on November 26, 1927 in Clarks, Louisiana to the late Johnnie Joseph and Comelia Jane (Richardson) Stokes. After high school, he served in the United States Army and also the U. S. Merchant Marines. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He married Dorothy Loucile Peters on December 17, 1952 in Center, Texas. Johnnie enjoyed camping, fishing, was an avid reader, and enjoyed golf during his retirement years. He was Past Master of Masonic Lodge #57, AF&AM, in Salida, Colorado. He was also a member of the First Christian faith.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Stokes of Colorado Springs; three children, John Walter Stokes of Colorado Springs, now working in Afghanistan; Michael (wife, Sherri) Stokes of New Braunfels, Texas; and Susan K. (husband, Roy) McComas of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister, MaryEllen Baker of Houston, Texas.
Graveside services with Military Honors are planned for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Staging Area “B” at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. A celebration of his life will follow at his granddaughter’s home.
