Karen McMullin
Karen McMullin, age 68, a 30-year resident of Colorado Springs, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013 in Colorado Springs. She was an elementary special education teacher and a loving mother, wife, sister, and friend.
Karen Louise Munson was born on April 16, 1944 in Mount Pleasant, Mich., to the late Carl and Linnea (Sjoberg) Munson. She attended schools in Cadillac, Mich., and earned a bachelor’s in speech pathology from Michigan State University. She received her master’s in reading from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. She married Melvin C. McMullin, Jr., on July 10, 1971 in Cadillac. She was a special education teacher in many of the communities in which her husband’s Air Force career took her. She taught in Detroit and Battle Creek, Mich., Panama City, Fla., and locally in Colorado Springs School District 11 at Keller, Carver, and King Elementary Schools, where she specialized in speech and reading.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution for over 45 years, and the Drake University Alumni Parents Association. She volunteered in the local community, including with the Pikes Peak Library District teaching English as a second language and at Peterson Air Force in the base thrift shop.
She is survived by her children: Ian Lars McMullin of Eagan, Minn.; and Jenna Kathleen McMullin of Arlington, Va.; her brother, Carl (wife, Linda) Munson of Muskegon, Mich.; and two sisters: Rita (husband, Duane) Roost of Holt, Mich.; and Linda George of Muskegon. Karen also has six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Lt. Col. Melvin C. “Mac” McMullin, Jr. USAF (Ret.) in 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, 1515 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. Private interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va..
Karen will be best remembered for her love of children, her kind and sweet nature, her faith, and her selfless care for others.
