Laura (Pettus) McAfee
March 21, 1934 – August 24, 2015
Laura was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to the union of Grier R. Pettus and Bleeker (Miller) Pettus. She graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina with a B.A. and did graduate studies at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama in Special Education.
She retired from District 2 and spent many years subbing in School District 11, 20, and 49. She was involved in volunteer work with various organizations, including the NAACP and the Sickle Cell Association. She was also a member of Circle Drive Baptist Church since 1971.
She is survived by her husband, John A. McAfee; her son, Michael A. McAfee (wife Betty Buitrago); her daughter, Michelle V. McDavid (husband Christopher); her grandchildren: Jhaylen, Jordan, Karis; 3 siblings: Dr. Rufus Grier Pettis, Evelyn Y. Pettus, Dorothy P. Perry; 3 sisters-in-law: Doretha Pettus, Clara Pettus, and Dr. Joyce Temple (husband Dr. Enoch Temple); her aunt, Alice Miller Gilmore; her uncle Henry Miller; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will take place from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Circle Drive Baptist Church, 801 North Circle Drive.
