Leona “Lee” M. Hayes passed away on November 5, 2013. She was born March 3, 1927 to Frank and Marie (Bergman) Penner in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She was a resident of Colorado Springs since 1955.
Leona grew up on the family farm in Oklahoma, and though she came from humble beginnings, she succeeded in life through her strong will to achieve. She loved dogs, butterflies, telling jokes, dancing, had a great sense of humor, and made many friends wherever she went. She also loved the Colorado mountains and taking drives. She was a very active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal of Eagles #143 and #3260. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Leona is survived by her daughter, Karen (Harold) Miskel, and two grandchildren: Melissa (Victor) Verdeal and Lori (John Rowe) Miskel, and friend and companion, Vern Swanson.
Funeral services are planned for Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Gate of Heaven. A reception will follow at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #143.
