Mabel J. Roberts
December 18, 1927 – March 23, 2012
Mabel J. Roberts, age 84, passed away in her home on March 23rd.
Mabel was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She weighed only two and a half pounds at birth, and her parents were told not to expect her to live, but she proved the doctors wrong. She attended Leland High School in Leland, Mississippi where she played on the women’s basketball team and graduated in 1946.
In 1954, she met a pilot stationed at Greenville Air Force Base in Greenville, Mississippi, and on January 2, 1955, she and Frank W. Roberts were married.
She loved living in the different places the Air Force sent them to – Georgia, New Mexico, Colorado, France, and back to Colorado in 1966 where they raised three children.
After moving back to Colorado, Mabel volunteered at Penrose Hospital for a number of years, and later worked for Wells TV Service and Memorial Hospital.
She loved people and welcomed all into her home. Mabel’s door was always open to anyone who was in need; she never turned anyone away.
Mabel dearly loved being a mother, grandmother and more recently, a great-grandmother.
She is survived by her three children, Becky Bain, Bill Roberts, and Wendy Finley. She is also survived by a sister, Norma Hall, four grandchildren, Julie Bain, Laura (Matt) Eckert, James Finley, and Kyle Haines, two step-grandchildren, Amanda and Mary Mullen, and two great-grandchildren, Ella and Bradley Eckert. Her husband and a sister, Kate, predeceased her.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the Black Forest Community Church, 6845 Shoup Road. Private inurnment will be on Thursday at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum, Columbarium of Tranquility.
