Mae Aileen Browne Maley, 92, passed away June 29, 2017. Born March 16, 1925 in Opelika, Alabama, Aileen was the oldest daughter of James and Orleane Browne, both educators. She graduated from Auburn University in 1947. While a student, she met and married John Lewis Maley of LaGrange, Georgia. After serving in WWII, John returned to active duty in the Army in 1952. The family moved to Colorado Springs in 1964. For 21 years Aileen taught English, Social Studies and Home Economics at Fountain Junior High. She completed her MA in 1969 at the University of Colorado.
John and Aileen made wonderful friends in the many places they were stationed and after retirement. They continued to travel, participating in numerous trips with the Friendship Force, also hosting visitors from abroad. For decades, happy times were celebrated at mountain cabins with old college friends and their families. After John’s death, Aileen continued to embrace life, traveling with friends and family. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and more recently Gateway Presbyterian. Aileen participated in the Association of University Women, American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, the Assistance League and Friendship Force. She enjoyed researching genealogy, reading, Bible study, playing bridge and loved the outdoors.
Aileen was preceded in death by her husband, John; and sisters, Joanne Harper and Daisy Persons. She is survived by three daughters: Joan Maley, Ellen Hayes and Carol Wittmer; six grandchildren: Jennifer Hofmeister, Suzanne Green, Joanne Perry, Marty Wittmer, Nancy Wittmer, Christine Rushford; and eight great grandchildren.
Aileen was dedicated to family, a woman of faith and will be missed by many.
