Margaret Marie Mathews Fontes, 84, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away at home surrounded by her children Sunday, May 10, 2015 of natural causes.
Margaret was born July 1, 1930 in Mound City, KS, to Orville and Dora Mathews; grew up in Mound City where she graduated from high school, went to business school and got her first job with RKO Radio in Kansas City, MO. Following her marriage she was a devoted military wife and mother, worked in real estate for many years, and retired from SD#11 in Colorado Springs.
She married CSM(Ret) Alexander Fontes on Aug 31, 1950 in Montgomery County, TN. They were stationed all over the world for the next 28 years, wherever the Army took them while raising 5 kids. They were married for 48 years before Alex passed away in 1998.
She enjoyed music, the outdoors, played multiple sports and taught her children how to fish for both the sport and the Lord. She loved being around her family, being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Most of all she just loved the Lord, her church family, and was devoted to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her children: Tanna Fontes Shontz (David), CoSpgs; Michael Fontes, Denver; Anthony Fontes (Donna), Cheyenne, WY; Benjamin Fontes, CoSpgs; and Edward Fontes (Colleen), Severn, MD; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Elma Davis, Tucson, AZ; and Lela Cross (Richard), Aurora.
She is preceded in death by her husband Alex, her parents Orville and Dora Mathews, brother John and sisters Dorothy, Helen and Jean.
Memorial Service will be held Monday, 18 May at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, Colorado Springs, CO. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Springs Rescue Mission in Colorado Springs.
