Marjorie Lee (Hockett) Smith, age 82, died July 10, 2024, at The Lodge at Palmer Point Residential Assisted Living in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Her husband of 55 years, Robert William Smith, Jr. preceded her in death in 2016.
Marjorie was born November 26, 1941, in Salida, Colorado to Ray Floyd Hockett, Jr. and Georgia Henrietta (McGehee) Hockett. She grew up in Salida and graduated from Salida High School with high honors in 1959.
She worked at Salida Hot Springs during her teens and at Salida Building and Loan after graduation until she married long-time family friend, Robert William Smith, Jr. in 1961. Their daughter, Janelle Lee (Smith) Smith was born the following year in 1962.
They lived in Boulder, Colorado while Robert attended the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy Boulder until he graduated in early 1963 and then moved to Denver, Colorado for a short time. They then decided to relocate to Colorado Springs, Colorado later that year where they made their forever home until their passing.
She attended Blair Business College and graduated with honors in 1981, then worked in Civil Defense Contracting until she retired.
Marjorie had many lifelong creative talents and interests. She was very skilled in fiber arts (stitchery, sewing, quilting and weaving) and as a photographer and gardener.
Marjorie passionately devoted much of her spare time for many years volunteering as a public safety advocate for the Colorado Springs Police Department and the Colorado Springs Fire Department. To honor her and in recognition of her tireless and relentless hours staunchly fighting for issues to help make CSPD officers’ and CSFD firefighters’ jobs and lives better and for the overall public interest as well, the City named a street after her (Marjorie Lee Drive).
She later received recognition from a Colorado State Senator for her years of volunteer public service to the community.
She is survived by her daughter, Janelle Lee (Smith) Smith; son-in-law, Craig J. Smith; grandson, Travis J. Smith (Baylee); great-granddaughter, Cambree M. Smith; great-grandson, Creede R. Smith; brother, Lonnie R. Hockett and family; nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband and her parents.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910, at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Cremation has taken place. Charitable donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Heart Association or LumiCare Hospice.
