December 29, 1945 – December 22, 2024

Mary Louise Sowers passed away peacefully on December 22, 2024, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just one week shy of her 79th birthday. She was born on December 29, 1945, in Floyd, Virginia, to Joe Malcolm Sowers and Gertrude Louise Minnick Sowers.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her son, Robert E. Hunter; her daughter, Susan Hunter-Smith; her son-in-law, Stuart Smith; and her cherished granddaughters, Olivia Smith and Lauren Smith. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph Sowers. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marjorie Sowers; her brother, Scott Sowers; and her sister, Susan Wimmer.

A proud graduate of Floyd County High School, Mary often reminisced about playing basketball for the school team. Those memories brought her great joy throughout her life and were a favorite topic to share with family and friends.

Mary had a remarkable ability to connect with others. Her kind heart, warm sense of humor, and radiant smile made everyone feel welcome in her presence. She brought happiness to all who crossed her path and never missed an opportunity to brighten someone’s day.

She was deeply passionate about supporting veterans and made it a priority to express gratitude for their service whenever possible. Mary also had a special place in her heart for children, especially her beloved granddaughters, Olivia and Lauren, with whom she shared countless treasured moments.

Though she spent her later years in Colorado, Mary remained deeply connected to her roots in the mountains of Virginia. She will be laid to rest there among the rolling hills that she always held dear.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at (http://act.alz.org/goto/Mary_Sowers) or Mutts with a Mission at (https://www.muttswithamission.org/).

May her memory bring comfort and joy to all who knew and loved her.
