Maxine Luree Glaskin

Maxine Luree Glaskin passed away peacefully Friday, March 6, 2015 at Liberty Heights Manor at the age of 95. She was born April 6, 1919 on a farm near Grafton, Nebraska to Harriett and John Burt. She was raised on the farm during depression years and helped her family in the fields. She graduated from Grafton High School and attended Hastings College, Hastings, NE for 2 years.
Yearning to try big city life, she asked and received permission from her parents to move west to Denver, CO where she met her husband of 64 years, James Birch Glaskin. They were married in Denver in 1942. Birch soon joined the navy and went to war. They relocated to California where she waited endlessly for his return from deployments in the South Pacific. During that time she worked in San Francisco and San Diego. Upon his discharge they returned to Colorado and moved to Colorado Springs in 1946. Maxine was initially a stay-at-home mother following the birth of son, Jim and daughter, Karen. She was an active volunteer in her children’s schools and eventually returned to work in School District #11 as an office secretary, finishing with a 20 year career in that position. She facilitated the opening of the new Washington Irving and Sabin Junior High schools. She was an active community volunteer at the Senior Center, Pioneer Museum, Colorado Youth Citizenship Award Committee and was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, Patty Jewett Golf Club Patty Niners, and Antique Club. She chaired the Colorado Springs Girls State for many years. She was an avid bridge player and a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, infant sister, and husband who passed away in January 2007. She is survived by one sister, Ardith (Jean) Reese of Charlotte, NC; two children: James Glaskin, of Scottsdale, AZ and Karen (Clive) Grant of Colorado Springs; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home, 1730 East Fountain Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church, 219 East Bijou St., Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80903. Private entombment will take place at the Shrine of Remembrance Mausoleum.
