Neil Irwin Luehring
Neil, 86, departed this life on June 17th, 2013. He lived his entire life in Colorado Springs. He was a retired Captain on the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
Neil was born on March 3, 1927 to Carl and Ethel Luehring. He was raised in Colorado Springs, played football and basketball while at Colorado Springs High School and graduated in 1945. He went directly into the Army and served in WWII. In 1947, he married Sharon King and they celebrated their 66th Anniversary on June 15th.
Neil loved fishing, woodworking, sports and watching John Wayne movies. He enjoyed telling fishing stories or sharing stories of his boyhood at Glen Eyrie. His father was the caretaker of the Glen and their family lived in the gate house for several years. His greatest love was spending time with his wife and the big, fun-loving family they created.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; his children, Shara Nordstrom, Susan Lester, Neil C. Luehring and Stephanie Bauer, their spouses; 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren (and still counting). He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Marie Ayers and Betty Vencill.
A Celebration of Neil’s life will be held on Friday, July 12th at 2:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Remembrance “America the Beautiful” Chapel, followed by “Firehouse Coffee” at Old Fire Station #4 Fire House Museum at 29 S. Institute Street.
