February 9, 1933 – December 1, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ret. Lt. Col. Gerald Russel Welling on December 1, 2024, at the age of 91, surrounded by loved ones.
Gerald was born to James and Jessie Pearl Welling on February 9, 1933, in Omaha, Nebraska, and lived a life marked by many achievements. He attended the University of Omaha and was subsequently commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the Infantry Officer Candidate School in 1954. He attended the Armor Officer Basic Course and later served as a Platoon Leader with the 12th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Rifle Battalion, and the 3rd Squadron, 8th Cavalry. After attending the Armor Officer Advanced Course, he received a degree in business administration from the University of Omaha in 1964. Ret. Lt. Col. Welling came to Fort Carson in 1971 and served as the Division Headquarters Commandant prior to assuming command of the 1st Squadron, 10th Calvary in 1973. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, National Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Honor Service Medal, and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Carole, and sons, Mike and James. He was predeceased by his son, Ted. In addition, he is survived by 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Services to honor Gerald’s life will be held at 10:00am on January 3, 2025, at the Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd. in Colorado Springs, and will be followed by his burial at 12:00pm at Pikes Peak National Cemetery.
Gerald’s memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
