Richard ‘Dick’ Carlton Whaley passed away on January 22, 2024. He resided in Colorado Springs for 65 years and practiced as an attorney.
Richard was born on March 5, 1943, to Eugene Bissel Whaley and Amy Whaley in Rome, New York. On October 15, 1988, Richard and Nelyda “Nellie” Whaley joined in union to a beautiful marriage in Colorado Springs.
Dick graduated from Widefield High School in 1961. After that he attended Otero College. He fell in love with law after having to present his case against five lawyers with only textbook knowledge- and won. Dick went to law school in Denver afterwards and practiced law up until his passing.
Dick served in the United States Military under the C.I.A. as a sniper during the Vietnam war. He always had a strong, fighter spirit. He carried that fight into the court rooms and won almost every case.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and a sharp wit. Dick could make anyone laugh. He grew up going hunting and fishing with his father, which he continued to do his entire life. Dick also frequented the gun range and was a member of the American Rifle Association. He was a sharpshooter up until his late life as well.
He is survived by his best friend and caregiver of 13 years, Pravitar Williams; his sister, Sharon Kay Whaley-Speak; his daughter, Scherie; and his three cats: Rascal, Precious, and Buddy.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, please make a donation to the American Diabetes Association in honor of his late wife Nellie.
