Robert “Bob” Nelson died on June 28, 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born on June 14, 1921 in Benedict, North Dakota and graduated from Velva High School. He then served for 4 years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Quartermaster Corps with 18 months in North Africa. After his discharge he attended the University of Iowa where he received a BSC and MA in Business Administration.
Bob then was employed by the Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, Iowa for 37 years. At the time of his retirement in 1986 he was Vice President and Publisher of the Better Homes and Gardens Book Group.
During these years he was Director of Development and Board Member of the Des Moines Civic Center, Chairman of The Salvation Army Advisory Board, and Director of Development for the Des Moines Public Library. He served as a volunteer mediator for the District Small Claims Courts in both Polk (Iowa) and El Paso (Colorado) Counties. He was a member of the Wakonda Club, Embassy Club and Metropolitan Club in Des Moines, the New York Publishers Club, and Garden of the Gods Club and the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Arline; his son, Curtis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his daughter, Karen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and two grandchildren: Blake Nelson and Krista Nelson. He is pre-deceased by another son, Eric; his parents: Arthur and Marie Nelson; and his brother, Lloyd.
A memorial service for immediate family will be held at a later date. His ashes will be interred, along with his son’s, at Shrine of Remembrance, Colorado Springs.
