Vern Phillip Smith passed away peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado on April 5, 2024. He was 90 years old. Born in Imogene, Iowa on January 30, 1934, to Thomas and Nellie Smith. Vern served in the US Army post WWII, during the Korean War era. His duties allowed him to see much of Europe and make lifelong friends in Germany where he was stationed.
After returning to Tabor, Iowa, Vern met and married Anna Mae “Ann” (Halm Emmert) on June 14, 1959. They raised two daughters while living, working and farming in rural Tabor, Iowa. After decades in Fremont County, the pair later moved to Colorado to be closer to their daughters. Vern spent his last years in Colorado Springs enjoying the weather, mountains, fishing, gardening, reading poetry, baking, walking, hiking, biking, watching the grandchildren grow up and many other activities.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, in 2010. He is survived by his daughters: Renée Inaba (Derek) and Marcia Stacey (Timothy); and two grandchildren: Jillian and Cameron Stacey.
Please take this time to remember both Vern and Ann as this closes the many chapters of their lives on Earth. They are both at peace now along with so many loved ones, family and friends that preceded them.
A private family service will be held in Colorado Springs. The family requests no flowers or memorial gifts. They ask that you donate to charities and causes of your own choosing and remember to hold your own loved ones closer and in kindness while you are still blessed with their presence.

18 Apr 2024Renée, Marcia. Husbands, and grandchildren we were so fortunate to have known Vern. He was a warm, sensitive, and caring individual who loved life, family, and everyone. We will miss him tremendously but we know that he’s in a great place with his beloved wife. He was a wonderful friend.
