Lt. Col. Warren L. Burns USAF, (Retired), 94, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2015 following several hospitalizations over the last six months.
Warren was born on December 19, 1920 to the late Henry Harry and Lillian (Bolton) Burns on a farm in eastern Kansas. After graduating from Emporia State Teachers College in mathematics, he became a meteorologist with the United States Air Force and served his country in Europe during WWII. He worked briefly for the US Weather Bureau before returning to the Air Force, with additional foreign assignments in Greenland, Newfoundland, Canada, and Tokyo, Japan. He finished with 40 years Federal Service after administering computer systems for the DOD following retirement from the Air Force. During retirement, Warren and his high school sweetheart and wife of 72 years, Helen (Carpenter) enjoyed watching baseball on television, traveling (especially RVing) and genealogy (publishing several family books.)
Warren is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; son, Alan (Cindy); daughter, Nancy; four grandchildren: Christopher (Cheri), Stephanie (Lalo), Kimberly (Tyson) and David (Rebecca). He is also survived by six great grandsons: Diego and Emilio Cornejo, Noah, Simon and Emmett Lunsford and Quinn Burns.
A private family gathering, military honors and inurnment will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. In honor of Warren, memorial donations may be sent to the Brookdale at Skyline Cares Fund, 2365 Patriot Heights, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80904.
